This week I’ve really been working on expanding my hairstyle repertoire. I don’t go many places during the week because I’m happily home with Addie, but I always try to make sure that I look nice even if I’m not going out of the house. It’s just one little thing that helps me stay sane around here. I thought that the waterfall braid would be a perfect hairstyle for any mom just trying to take their “half up/half down” hair to the next level. It’s great for looking cute when you’ve got a play date, running around at work, or when you’re grabbing drinks with your friends during happy hour after a long day. The waterfall braid is my new favorite hairstyle, and I hope you love it too.
Remember: The goal of Mom Hair Monday? To give you a cute, functional hairstyle that will take you from drab to fab in 5 minutes. 5 minutes is all we have, right moms? I’ll be showing you my tried and true hairstyles that are no fuss but look like you put in a ton of effort. The second installment of Mom Hair Monday starts NOW and is the waterfall braid.
What will you need for the Waterfall Braid?
2 clear elastics, Bobby pins, Brush (I love the Wet Brush), and a Rat Tail Comb
Makeup: Foundation- Benefit Big Easy in Fair, Concealer- Tarte CC Undereye Collector in Light-Medium, Brows- Anastasia Brow Wiz in Taupe, Eyeshadow- Naked on the Run, Eyeliner- MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, Mascara- Benefit Rollerlash, Blush-Urban Decay Naked Flushed, Highlighter- Benefit Watts Up, Lipstick- MAC Speaklouder (under) and MAC Angel (top)
Here’s how to do it:
1. Brush out your hair and use your rat tail comb to part your hair into a side part. Then, to begin your waterfall braid, take 2 small sections of hair.
2. Holding your two sections, cross the front section of hair (the piece along your hairline) over the other section, so the hair is going away from your face.
3. Grab another section of your hair from the top of your head.
4. Let it fall between the two sections of hair you already had. This will start to create the waterfall look.
5. Taking the bottom section of your hair, pull it over the waterfall section. Then, you will need to take another section of hair from the top of your head to make another waterfall and let it fall between the two sections of hair again.
6. Repeat these steps over and over until your waterfall braid is the length that you like it. I personally like to braid each side until it reaches the back of my head.
7. Once you get towards the end of the waterfall, finish it out with a regular braid and secure with a clear elastic.
8. After your braid is secure, tuck the end under the layers of hair in the back of your head. Use your bobby pins to hold it in place by crossing them in an X. Repeat on the other side and VOILA you’re done!
So there you have it- the Waterfall Braid tutorial. I suggest practicing once or twice the night before if it’s your first try, but once you learn how to do it, I promise you’ll want to do the Waterfall Braid more often and it’ll be easy enough for you to do in 5 minutes. Let me know if you try it, and make sure to come back next Monday for another Mom Hair Monday hairstyle!
